Sexual predators are actively targeting potential victims through online dating sites and hook-up apps, as rape and sexual assault figures in Queensland hit a five-year high.

Police and sexual assault counsellors said they were working with more survivors who had suffered an attack after meeting someone either on a website or via a mobile app.
One of those is 42-year-old Jane — not her real name — who met a man at a local pub after the pair courted one another through an online dating service.
Jane first found the man online and the pair became friends.
When she woke up and when she went to bed she would receive a sweet message from the man on her mobile phone.
'I was chatting to a really nice guy,' Jane said.
How a moon-lit walk turned violent
After weeks of conversation and flirting on the phone, the two decided to meet at a pub on Brisbane's north.
Jane arrived sober and let him know that she was waiting out front.
'We chatted for a while, then we decided to go for a walk in a park, which was mistake number one — [but] because it was well lit, I didn't think anything of it,' Jane said.
Moments later, Jane realised they were on the edge of a dark and isolated playing field — it was there she was raped.
'He just had me trapped — he told me 'don't yell, don't scream, don't bring attention to myself' because otherwise he would hurt me,' Jane said.
'My biggest fear was if he had a weapon.'
The attack ended when a group of men happened to walk by, spooking her rapist.
'I just sat on the ground crying because I was so lost, and I think I was very traumatised and I was frozen with fear,' Jane said.
Dating sites 'creating a problem', police say
Jane is one of the more than 30,000 people in Queensland who have become targets of sexual assault since mid-2013, and among the 2,087 who faced a rape or attempted rape.
The numbers are at a five-year high, which may show women are feeling more confident about reporting the attacks.
Detective Senior Sergeant Daren Edwards, who is based on Queensland's Sunshine Coast, said dating sites were 'creating a problem' because they could help link a predator to a target.
'People are meeting and hooking up in hotels with people they don't really know,' Detective Senior Sergeant Edwards said.
'They don't know if they're going to have a drink or if a person is going to show up and spike their drink.
'You don't know who those people are — that's a very dangerous situation.'
And while women and children were the most likely to be sexually assaulted or raped, men were not immune.
Detective Senior Sergeant Edwards said in one recent incident, a man was convicted after violently attacking a date he met on a gay dating site.
'This victim hadn't met this person before — he had some familiarity with them,' he said.
'Nobody knows why he turned into a violent predator, but that's what he did — you can never know.'
Counsellors too are warning that there is an emerging problem with sexual assaults growing out of dating apps and websites.
The Australian Study of Health and Relationships, published in 2014, found that out of the 20,000 people it surveyed, 4 per cent of men and 22 per cent of women had either been forced or frightened into doing something sexual that they had not wanted.
Few told anyone about the incidents and even fewer spoke to a professional about it.
Is the situation becoming worse?
A higher number of rapes and sexual assaults being reported to police could show more survivors are seeking justice.
But clinical psychologist Karen Aspinall, from support service Laurel House, said while it was possible the world was becoming safer, she doubted it.
'I'm not seeing that — I'm certainly not seeing anything out there that leads me to believe that it's getting better,' Ms Aspinall said.
'We do want to keep encouraging people to come forward after an experience of sexual violence, so we can get a better picture of what's really going on in our communities.'
Ms Aspinall said that was made harder by those attacked after an online date or hook-up, who worried they might be criticised for their actions.
'They're worried people won't believe them or blame them for being sexually assaulted,' Ms Aspinall said.
Jane said that was part of the reason why she did not want to report her attacker to police.
'I didn't want that stigma of 'you probably deserved it', 'you did the stupid thing of going to meet a random guy in a car park', where it was well lit, where I thought I'd feel safe,' Jane said.
Police hunting predators, serial rapists
Jane also said the man who attacked her might be using the sites to target others.
'I don't know how many other women he's done it to, and that's what the scary part is,' Jane said.
'It breaks my heart because I hear of so many stories from Tinder dates where it all goes wrong. So if I can just save one girl from having to go through what I have been through then I'll be happy.
'Just tell someone where you're going because no-one knew what I was doing or where I was going, and if things had turned bad, I guess no-one would have known where to find me because I didn't tell a soul.'
Detective Senior Sergeant Edwards said even if someone was not keen on pressing charges after an attack, it was important to pass on the information to police because the person might be a serial offender.
'That victim might not be the only victim — later on there could be other victims. If there are predators in our community, we need to know who these people are,' he said.
